Subject: [HUNGARY-L] Turkish or Persian influence on Hungary
Date: Wed, 19 Aug 1998 19:09:28 -0700

I have spent the last year doing extensive research on my Hungarian last
name "Azary". So far, I have found out that my ancestors originated in
two villages, Nagy-azar and Kis-azar, which are now in Slovakia and have
been renamed.

The word "Azar" appears in the Persian, Turkish, and Azerbaijan
languages. In talking to many linguists and historians, it almost seems
to make sense that the villages used a Turkish or Persian word. My
ancestors must have adopted the name when families started taking last
names. Anyway, one dialect of Turkisk describes "Azar" to mean towering
and elevated. The Northeast part of Hungary has mountainous areas, which
may explain the origin. This is just a theory at this point. I would be
interested in hearing from any knowledgable or interested parties, to see
if they have any comments. Thanks.
