The easiest way to get Naturalization records in the NYC area is to email the
Varick St. Branch with the names and dates, give them your snail address (as they
respond that way with copies of the index cards they find that match the info you
give) and hopefully they have found your person.
Passenger lists into NY are not indexed from 1847-1897. You must know a date and
then obtain the film for that time, or search the year of arrival . Sending to
NARA for that information (for any year) is hopeless. NARA workers are given only
24 minutes to find the information sent in on ANY form to them, and if they can't
find it they mark it not found.
It is always better to search yourself.
