Dear group, I would love to find out more about the Hungarian half of my
ancestry. In the vague hope that someone will recognize any of these
names, here is a brief summary:
Barbara Jane CHOMOR, b. 1937 in Chicago, IL. Her parents were Nicholas
Chomor, b. 1912 in Martonvasar, Hungary and Barbarba HARMATH b. 1912 in
Budapest. Nicholas' parents were Louis Chomor, born ? in Kecskemet and
Catherine AUGUSTINE b. ? in Neczpal, Nyitra, Hungary. Both are buried
in the Bohemian National Cemetery in Chicago, IL.
Barbara Harmath Chomor's parents were Bela Harmath, b. 1876 place
unknown, married Barbara HEGYI(b. 1886 in Aszod) in Budapest in 1908.
He died in 1919 from the effects of WWI and Barbara emigrated to
Chicago. She was Oscar Meyer's housekeeper. Her parents were Janos
Hegyi and VeronicaKIS(b. Matraverebely, Hungary, d. 1926 Aszod). Bela
Harmath's parents were Janos Harmath and Paula ALAPI. I have that Janos
Harmath died in Szekesfehervar.
This represents the sum total of what my great aunt, the oldest living
relative, can relate. I would love to be able to add to this knowledge,
and I am located near a Family History Center, where I have had
extraordinary luck researching my father's lines. However, none of the
volunteers know anaything about doing research in Hungary, and the FHC
catalog does not appear to yield much when I query it re these place
names. I did find the orginal record on film of my great grandmother's
baptism in Aszod, but that was all.
Have any of you found useful web sites on Hungarian research, or books I
could order through interlibrary loan, or should I simply write to the
towns where my ancestors were born and hope for a reply? I'm at a loss
here and would truly appreciate any suggestions anyone would care to
give.
And, of course, should anyone actually be researching my names I would
be delighted to hear from you!
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to All.
Mary Rollis
