I sent a letter to the National Archives in Budapest and received a very
courtious reply listing the birth, death, and marriage certificates
available for my family and the cost of ordering them ($25 each, very
reasonable I think). About a month later (last week) I received a
letter from the director of the Archive reporting that he had taken the
liberty of researching my family for me and obtaining the available
documents for the past four generations..."please send me $150 for my
work...thank you"
Now I would like to know if this is standard procedures over seas, or if
this guy is trying to supplement his income. I in no way arthorized
research, I simply asked what records were available and how much they
cost when I wrote to the archive.
Any suggestions?
Diana
