Subject: Still New ?? QUESTIONS ??

I have copies of my grandfather and great-grandparents naturalization papers.
Not ever having done this type of research, could someone please answer some
questions for me.

When and how did one get the papers, was it a specific time period that one
had to wait to get these papers?
Was it similiar to todays citizenship applications?
Are there actual application papers that can be accessed that would tell me
more info , for instance the place of birth and perhaps maiden names of wives
included on the papers?
Would they tell me the year of entry perhaps ?
