Subject: [HWE] The BUGLER families of Dorset - a HUGUENOT connection

Hello Listers
I resending part of a post I sent to the list a couple of weeks ago. I've
had no response. Possibly no-one can answer my query. However, I'd
appreciate if anyone could give me any hints on where to go to see if
there's any truth in the stories I've heard.
I'm researching the BUGLER family of Beaminster and Netherbury in Dorset. My
researches are purely web-based so far, and I'm conscious of both the
advantages and the gaps that this entails.
As I make contact with other researchers into this family, I'm struck by a
recurring story - that the family is of Huguenot origin. These stories are
anecdotal, and differ in detail, names and ultimate geographical origin
(Brittany, Alsace-Lorraine, Paris area.). There is no date or time given to
narrow things down.
The prevailing theme is that the name BUGLER is an anglicisation of
Beauclair or Beauclerc. My French is pretty rusty - and my French
linguistics even rustier - I tend to wonder about the "c" to "g" transfer,
and the French rounded "oh" sound to the English "uh" as in "but". Most
people today pronounce the name as Bew-gler - although military instrument
is an 18th century invention. If I remember correctly, the anglicisation of
"beau" to "bew" is medieval - Beaulieu as Bewley, "beauty" as "bew- tee".
Later transfers were "beau" to "bow".
Early BUGLER records that I've found so far are from London, Norfolk and
Dorset, and they date from about 1590 to 1620. The most interesting finding,
so far, is a marriage between a John BOWGLARE and Thomazin BEADLE on 24
November 1658 in St Dunstan, Stepney. They are no further web traces for
this family.
My knowledge of Huguenot history is not detailed - although I've done
something of a crash course over the last couple of weeks. There might
indeed be some element of truth in these stories.
The BOWGLARE entry is intriguing, although I wonder if there's any link
between the London and Norfolk families and the Dorset BUGLERS. I know many
Huguenots settled in London and East Anglia - and some came to south-west
England. Beaminster is near the sea-port of Bridport on the south-coast.
Many of the earlier Beaminster BUGLERS were textile workers; some were
mariners.
I would welcome any help list-members can give me in beginning to resolve
this puzzle.
