Bronwyn and Sue -
This I find of interest as a first cousin three times removed of mine,
Anna Maria Smith, was married to a Thomas A. Cock. He joined his
brother in law, Percival Norton Johnson, in his new firm of gold and
silver refiners. The firm became known as Johnson & Cock. He then
developed a method of refining platinum and of producing a malleable
ingot by powder metallurgy. This firm grew into the present Johnson
Matthey, the major refiner of platinum in the world today. (Their head
office and main works at that time were in Hatton Garden).
1 COCK, Thomas A b: Unknown in ? d: 1842 in ?
. +SMITH, Anna Maria b: Unknown in ? m: 1810 in ? d: Abt. 1840 in ?
2 COCK, Thomas Astley b: 1811 in ? d: Unknown in ?
2 COCK, William John b: 1813 in ? d: 1892 in ?
Should you come across them, or a mention of platinum in connection with
the name, I would be most interested.
I have to confess to never previously thinking that the name Cock might
have Huguenot origins. To males of my age this brings back memories of
that great Australian popular singer of our youth, Judith Cock, aka Durham.
