Dear Tony,

Thanks for the information. I have picked up some details about the Lamys
in Spitalfields from here and there. One John Lamy in the mid 18th century
was a handkerchief weaver who seems to have had a large business; there's an
illustration of a billhead of his in The Quiet Conquest exhibition catalogue
(1985), page 294. And he or a namesake owned the house in Princelet Street,
Spitalfields, which now belongs to the Landmark Trust and is used as a holiday
let. But I'm trying not to spend too much time on the family until I know
for certain that I'm related to them ...

The surname Ellerm I for long thought might be French; family myth was that
the Ellerms had come from France and had been silk merchants in Spitalfields.
The name was said to have originated as D'Ellerm, and there is indeed a
French surname Del(l)erm today. But thanks to the IGI a Cambridgeshire family
of the same surname surfaced (a branch of the Ellham/Elham/Elam family there);
and I have been able to establish our descent from them as a certainty.

But family myths are often based on fact; and this one could just be a
memory of the Lamy connection I want to prove!

At the moment I'm pinning my hopes on wills, as follows:
1. PCC wills available on line at the National Archives website include
several for Lamys, of whom some are in East London; a John Lamy who died circa
1759 might be relevant.
2. I'm awaiting results from David Wright's very useful index of London
wills; _http://www.canterhill.co.uk/davideastkent/_
(http://www.canterhill.co.uk/davideastkent/) if anyone doesn't know it.
3. And also some Bank of England will extracts for members of the Lamy
family from the British Origins website (_http://www.origins.net/_
(http://www.origins.net/) ).
If any of these were to reveal the necessary family relationships among
beneficiaries I could do without the record of an Ellerm/Lamy marriage!

Best wishes,

Tim Hudson
