Dear Hanna,
Your reading list is fascinating. I showed it to my colleague in the
Huguenot Military History research group. It includes many works we have
never heard of. Absolutely invaluable will be the books on Danish
Huguenots. We have never found anything on the Huguenots in Denmark except
as a chapter in Weiss.
There is one book that few people would seem to have come across yet is
amazingly valuable. It itemises all the extant records relating to
Protestants which are in French state or regional archives. It is:
Gildas Bernard "Les Familles Protestantes en France XVIe siecle - 1792:
Guide des recherches biographiques et genealogiques (Paris, Archives
Nationales, 1987)
Moreover this book is still available for purchase online (or it was last
year) from the French equivalent of Amazon - FNAC.
The website is: www.fnac.com
A good introductory text on the wars of religion in France is:
R.J. Knecht, "The French Wars of Religion, 1559-1598" (London, 1996). It has
an extensive bibliography.
The fact is that there seem to be very few records which have survived re.
the protestant armies in C 16. Considering that scarcely anything has
survived re. Louis XIV's army I suppose it is not to be wondered at that
there is so little for the previous century. The Revolution and two world
wars have wiped out a great deal of France's archival records. In essence
the Protestant armies were local militias raised by Protestant war-lords and
record keeping would have been haphazard to say the least.
regards,
John V.
