Thanks for your reply to my query, Tony.
For the benefit of you and the others on the list, I'll summarize some of
what I have on the people of Bergerac. I realize that chances are slim that
any of the names might be useful to you, but you never know. I understand
that the population of Bergerac around the latter half of the century in the
1600's was estimated at around 6,000 souls, which in genealogical terms are
probably not bad odds either.
The names I have obtained from the Dordogne region are as follows:
The two main figures in my ancestry are:
Izaac Labuscaigne, l'ayné, tailleur. Parents: Abraham Labuscaigne and Jeanne
Artieu.
And Estienne Labuscaigne, le jeune, tailleur.
From the church register of Monbazillac, 7 km south of Bergerac, for data
was extracted:
10 mei 1637 Baptism Jean Labuscagnie, son of "Abran" and Jeanne Artieu.
Godfather Jean Artieu and godmother Suzanne Labuscagnie.
23 juni 1641 Baptism Isaac, son of "Habrant" (also written as "Habran" or
Abraham). Godfather: Isaac Labuscagnie and godmother: Suzanne Labuscagnie.
This Abraham Labuscagnie is mentioned as an elder between 1648 and 1649.
Family of Isaac Labuscaigne x Anne Dugueyla
Children:
Suzanne * 4-3-1668 ~ 21-3-1668. Godparents: Jean Duqueyla & Suzanne Fradet.
Isaac * 19-4-1671 ~ 11-5-1671 Godparents: Samson Passalaygue & Jeanne
Artieu
Jeanne * 8-2-1674 ~ 26-3-1674 Godparents Jacob Thouron Jeanne Faugeyrou
Marguerite * 27-5-1677 ~ 18-7-1677 + 1757 Godparents: Jean Lambert &
Marguerite Duqueyla. Marguerite later married Etiene Venance.
There is also a Samson Labuscagne mentioned, who was captured whilst trying
to escape France. He spent 15 years as a galley slave, probably in very
similar circumstances as the well-known Jean Martheile. In fact, the
Martheile name seems to crop up every now and then in my research, and may
be possible that Samson might have known Martheile, or indeed, could
possibly even have been related to him. Samson was bought free by the
Walloon church of Amsterdam in 1713 for 200 gilders, after which he joined
that congregation. He married Louise Teulon in 1718, and later also the
widow Marie L'Ecamier in The Hague, but it is not known whether these women
had any connection with the Bergerac region.
A certain Jacob Thouron also features, as well as Josiane Labuscaigne,
'veuve de Pierre Marteilhe maître tailleur'
Family of 17-3-1664 x Suzanne Fredet/Fradet
Children:
Isaac * 29-12-1664 ~ 3-1-1664. Godparents: Isaac Labuscagne and Françoise
Denugon (his maternal grandmother)
Jacob * 28-12-1666 ~ 15-8-1666. Godparents: Jacob Thouron, consul of
Bergerac & Marie Fradet
Jean * 28-12-1668 ~ 3-5-1669. Godparents: Jean Conseil, merchant of
Bergerac & Anne Duqueyla. (spouse of Isaac Labuscagne, master tailor at
Bergerac.)
David * 23-8-1670 ~ 1-9-1670. Godparents: David Gardes & Jeanne Artieu
Elizabeth * 28-11-1671 ~ 25-12-1671. Godparents: Pierre Texier & Elizabeth
Dupeyrou
Pierre* ? ~ 23-9-1675. Godparents: Pierre Naudy & Marie Sanisson. (Pierre
is my direct ancestor. He later married Maria Anna Bacot, a refugee living
in Leeuwarden).
Abraham * 31-10-1677 ~ 31-10-1677. Godparents: Isaac Labuscagne & Suzanne
Labuscagne
Suzanne * ?? ~ 19-10-1678. Godparents: Daniel Sanisson. (merhcant at
Bergerac.) & Suzanne Pinet
Jean (8 dae) 4-10-1682 baptized by Rev. Ravisson, at Lamonzie. (Another
minister that features in my family's history is Rev. Roufrange, who later
became their minister in exhile at Enkhuizen after their escape to the
Netherlands.)
Catherine * 26-12-1686 ~ 29-12-1686 in l'Église des Récollets (Catholic
baptism!).
My ancestor, Pierre Labuscaigne, eventually migrated to Enkhuizen,
Netherlands. With him six other persons are mentioned as having come from
the same geographical region: Cleyrac-en-Guyenne, Caumont-en-Guyenne, Castel
Jaloux-en-Guyenne, Castel Moron-en-Angenois, Grattaloupe-en-Angenois, en
Monheur-près-de-Bordeaux. Unfortunately I don't have their names.
Pierre's in-laws involved names such as:
Anne du Pré
Adam & Anne van Wemen
Elizabeth Bacot x 1704 Joseph du Plant
Naria Anna Francois Bacot
Francois Bacot of Tours, France x 1652 Lucia Sibrandts (he became a
confectioner in Friesland) xx 1675 Josine Hulscher, widow of Jan du Pré of
Groningen.
I mention these names in case they should mean something to someone else.
The Thouron and Du Pré families, in particular, interest me, inasmuch as
they became major South African families later on.

protestantism in Guyenne.

Subject: [HWE] Bergerac
Hello all,
Do we have any members on the list who are engaged in researching Huguenots
and history from Bergerac, along the Dordogne river in France? We have
recently discovered some Thouron/Theron and Labuschagne/Labuscagne ancestors
who came from this region, and there are loose threads to tie up.
Regards,
Herman Labuschagne
