Hi,
I'm looking for information on the family of Claudius Pegues who immigrated
from London to South Carolina, in the colonies back in early 1700s. He was
born in London 1719. Family legend here is that his father was also named
Claudius. I've found a christening record in the LDS church records from a
church in London on Leichester St (I think) that shows a Claud with a slightly
different spelling on the surname, and parents Jean and Jeanne in 1719. The
father is supposed to have come from Rodez, France and married a Swiss lady
after sneaking out of France under a load of hay going into Switzerland. Then
he moved into England. Supposedly his parents and at least 2 brothers were
beheaded for their Protestant beliefs, and one younger brother was judged too
young to be held accountable and was spared. I tried a letter writing campaign
to several people with the surname living in the area of Rodez and received
only a reply from a widow there who married into the family and who knew
nothing of the history of her late husband's family. I do not speak French,
except for a very few words, so I had a translator help me get the letter into
French and then translate her reply.
I would like to find some history on this family prior to the move to South
Carolina. Any information would be greatly appreciated. My grandmother was
a Pegues.
Also I tried getting to the website with the CDs and only got to the home
site of Virgin.net.
Ever hopeful and still hunting,
Ida Madison
