Which was worse?
Remaining in France, while pretending to be a Catholic. Keeping your
property, yet fearing to be found out and sometimes being killed or tortured
when found out.
or
Leaving your homeland. Refusing the pretend to be Catholic. Losing all you
property, family and friends. Dangerous sea voyage and traveling the
"Huguenot Underground Railroad." Moving to a place where you knew no one and
couldn't speak the language. Starting out again with nothing. Moving to a
wild and uncivilized land.

Personally, I think the latter is more courageous.
