Hmm well just to show that I am not one to favour the
male Huguenot.
Who was Madame de RAMBURE, mentioned by the good
Cardinal in his work ?
"I was at the house of Madame de Rambure, a notable and
learned Huguenot, where I met with Mestrezat, the
famous minister of Charento" Source -
THE ENTIRE MEMOIRS OF JEAN FRANCOIS PAUL de GONDI,
CARDINAL DE RETZ Written by Himself
Quite an interesting story is the one by the said
Cardinal. And I only came across him while pondering
yet another Huguenot puzzle.
Who has the answer to this question ?
Vietnam has its walls... the Holocaust has its walls
etc.. Catholic martyrs can be found on almost any wall
in Europe...
Where would we find lasting stone monuments that depict
all the names of those heores who stayed in Europe to
defend their right to freedom of religion ?
I have made note of various memorials at Amiens and
Vassy, even La Rochelle. But in all my wanderings I
have as yet to discover a list.
Much has been written about those who ran away..(see
escaped or whatever words make the reader feel
comfortable with how their ancestors reacted during the
Wars of Religion).
Who were those who stayed, fought for the rights now
enjoyed by others in far off Ireland, England and the
'New World' ?
Oh I am sure that if we put our collective heads
together we can come up with a list of perhaps well
gosh.. maybe 100 patriots of the Huguenot cause.
Not many is it ?
There should be a "wall" a record of who these people
were.
Maybe I go on too much and the Huguenot Society in
London does actually have a list of all those who died
so that we can say our ancestors were Huguenot ?
And I don't mean to just centre on the main society.
Other Huguenot groups in other countries should be
sharing and have access to such a list.
If not.. why not ?
Good golly gosh.. almost enough to get Emile Zola out
of his grave. Zola ? oh you don't know about je accuse
? hmm ok well lets just say I am really wondering as to
how the memory of our gallant ancestors has been
recorded for the future.
Now if I were Canadian this would be up there with the
'Rant'
Kind Regards,
Peter Leroy
