David -
The Oxford Names Companion is not online as a free look-up. It may well be
as part of Oxford's 'subscription' service, I have not checked.
I was surprised not to be surprised (?) by the given name of 'Isaac'. A long
entry, but basically a Biblical name, born by the son of Abraham. Derivation
not certain. Traditionally connected with the Hebrew verb meaning 'to
laugh'.
In the Middle Ages it seem to have been borne only by Jews, but it was taken
up by the Puritans in the C17th and has continued in use since then amongst
Christians in the English speaking world, although it is still more common
among Jews.

Calling on a Unitarian doctor who complained of being in a cold ague, he
cried 'I can cure you. Cover yourself in the Thirty-nine articles and you
will soon be all of a delicate glow.' Rev. Sydney Smith 1771-1854, Canon of
St. Paul's.
