'The Oxford Names Companion' gives the name 'Collins' as 1/. English: patr.
from ME Col(l)in, 2/. Irish: Anglicized form of Gael. O Coileain and Mac
Coileain..
For the given name 'Colin' as 1/. English: diminutive form of the medieval
name Col(le), a short form of Nicholas. Now regarded as a name in it's own
right. 2/. Scottish: Anglicized form of the Gaelic name 'Cailean' which was
particularly favoured by the Campbells and the MacKenzies.
I too have an interest in Bristol and the Severn Valley where there are
early traces of SellOn and SellEn in the same villages.
Yours Aye Andrew Sellon East Anglia
The only way to deal with a man as O'Connell is to hang him up and erect a
statue to him under the gallows. Rev. Sydney Smith 1771-1854, Canon of St.
Paul's.
