Charles de BATZ-CASTELMORE aka d'Artagnan, (from his mother side a
MONTESQUIOU who had a d'Artagnan land) born between 1610-20 in Gascogny
was a king musketeer, he arrested finance minister Fouquet in 1661 and died
at the siege of Maastricht in 1673.
The siege in the Cyrano movie is that of Arras between the French and
Spanish (great show of the spanish infantry work ). This Cyrano movie is
really great even though Edmond Rostand the play's author made a Parisian,
Savinien CYRANO de Bergerac (1619-1655), somebody from Gascogny because the
name of his fief was Bergerac (name of a city in Dordogne) even though that
fief as shown later was 20 milles south of Paris. It's called artistic
license and it works in this case because it brings back to life an
important french writer of the 17th century . Luc

Hi folks
Couple of little things. If people are interested in the Musketeers era,
try to get/watch a copy of Cyrano de Bergerac, the one with Gerard
Depardeau. Part of the story (and the film) is set in the Siege of La
Rochelle.
I also remember reading, many years ago, that D'Artagnan was a historical
figure and was actually Captain of the Kings Musketeers. I also recall that
he was killed by a shot in the throat during the siege of La Rochelle -
needless to say, he was on the other side!!!!!!!!!!!!! That must have
stopped him buckling his swash, or whatever it was that they did then.
