Subject: [HWE] Surname Dupaty/Deputy
Date: Sun, 11 May 2003 16:16:28 -0500
I am a descendant of SYLVESTER DEPUTY. Following are some quotes that give the scant information that I have on the early line in American Colonies.
I am hoping to determine what the original spelling of this surname might have been. I suspect that the name could have been DePuy but I have been unable to find any records that place them in Wales nor have I found passenger records..
Would appreciate any help.

"The Deputy's were French Huguenots who emigrated to Wales because of religious persecution . While in Wales they changed the name to Dupaty. When they emigrated to America they changed the name to Deputy."
"The Deputy family was in territory acquired by William Penn, and April 8 1741, Sylvester Deputy received from Thomas Penn, a warrant of 350 acres of land in Milford District, Cedar Creek Hundred, Sussex County, now Delaware, then one of the Lower Counties of Pennsylvania. It is not certain if this land warrant was issued to Sylvester Sr. or Sylvester Jr."
"An untitled genealogy by unknown author believes that the first Deputy who migrated to America came from Wales about 1650 and settled in Delaware where they became planters and slave owners."
"Cavaliers & Pioneers Vol. II 1666-1695
As early as 1688 there is a mention of a Doctor Deputie whose plantation adjoined that of Mr. Edward Thomas south side of Rappahannock River. Could this be the ancestor of our Deputy family?"
