As it is somewhat quiet at the moment (no squabbles going on) I thought
I might post my brick wall in relation to the FUGARDS or FEUGARDS. They
were French Huguenots from Normandy. The name showed up in the 1700's in
Pont de l'Arche, and Elbeuf. The region Seine Maritime (#76) & the
region Eure, (#27) are about 8 miles apart. Unfortunately, I cannot read
French, nor can I afford to pay a professional researcher. Can anyone
suggest where I might be able to write to obtain further information?
The name means fire guard in French and they apparently fled to northern
Ireland, in the counties of Armagh and Down. It is not a common name,
but they have been found in Ireland, England, Canada, and the famous
playwright, Athol Fugard from South Africa.
My grandfather spoke French and was born as William John FUGARD in
Bessbrook, Co. Armagh. His birth(1870) and his parents' marriage in 1869
were all recorded in Newry (about 8 miles away) in County Down. Upon
coming to the U.S. in 1890, he changed the spelling to FEUGARD(E). I
located a Jhn Thomas FEUGARD christened Nov. 9, 1845 i Sculcoates,
Yorshire, England. Does anyone know how I can get a copy of this or
further information?
Any suggestions will be most appreciated.         Louise in
