Subject: [HWE] How My Huguenot Research Began and Continues
Date: Thu, 23 Jan 2003 13:58:30 EST
When I began my family research in the 1980s, I had no idea that my ancestors
were Huguenots, though I knew they were French. I checked the National
Huguenot Society and found the BOBO or various spellings was not on their
list.
A distant cousin wrote a research paper on the BOBO family, Huguenots in the
Back Country of South Carolina, which stirred my interest and debunked a
family tradition that "three brothers had come to America" in about 1739 from
France. In my line of the BOBO family it was only two brothers. Another
book by Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Newell, "BOBO, Cousins by the Dozens," made
reference to the tradition.
Scott Johnson, who wrote the paper which was published by the South
Carolina Huguenot Society, offered information on the family as Huguenots in
France. This was enough to get acceptance of the family by the National
Huguenot Society. Soon another cousin, Robert G. (Bob) BOBO went to France
to do additional research. He found extensive information on the family and
those who would like to review this can access this web site:

It is a part of a site we are building to provide more information on
the BOBO family in America. Thus far, we have been able to connect most of
the BOBOs in the United States to our original immigrant ancestor, Gabriel
BAUBAU, coming to Virginia in 1700. The family web site URL is:
www.familybobo.org. We add additional information as it becomes available and
invite all cousins to join our research efforts.
Incidentally, we have found a Roman Catholic Pope, Hyacinth BOBO, who
became Pope Celestine III. The family may have Sardinia and Italian origins,
according to information I have received from Catholic Church records and
other Internet Sources. We are told the Orsini family in Italy was a part of
the BOBO family.
We would appreciate contact from others researching the name: BOBO,
BEAUBEAU, BAUBEAU, BABAU, BAUBAU, BOBEAU and other variations. We believe
that our ancestor, Gabriel BOBO, was in England from about 1685 until he came
to Virginia in 1700, but have not found confirmation of this. A CD on the
family is available through the web site above.
The national BOBO Reunion will be 19-22 June 2003 in Athens, OH, with
information on the web site or by contacting the undersigned.
