Hi Peter
In Europe, at least here in Germany, the understanding of "Protestant" is to
be a member of a confession/church which separated from the Catholic church
during the late middle ages (its my definition; maybe it isn't totally
correct and someone else like Matthias can define this in a better way, but
it shows the rough direction).
So "Protestant" here is a synonym for "to be member of": the Evangelic
church, Evangelic-Lutheran church, United church(Prussia), Free Evangelic
church, Calvinist = German / French / Dutch / Swiss Reformed church,
Anglican church, etc.. Think this was the way the word was used also in
former times, so a member of the French Reformed Church (Eglise Reformee
Francaise, ERF) sometimes was named "Huguenot", or another time
"Protestant", "French Reformed" or even "Calvinist".
The term "Protestant" in my eyes is a term of honor, anyway ...
Take care.
Juergen
P.S.
Wanna thank you all for responding to my question re: Canadian Huguenots -
'twas very helpful and enlightening ...
