Hello, all --

Replying (very belatedly) to the post from Natasha
<> on 20 Sept re: TESTARD
surname, traced back to 1756 in Birmingham, ENG.

Natasha, you may be interested to know that the following
info has been posted to the list in the past --

1) TESTARD, TESTARD DES MESLARS and TESTART
surnames are listed under the heading Huguenots in Great
Britain & Ireland, 1643-1714 from the book "Irish Pedigrees"
by John O'Hart. This info was posted to the list on 25 Apr 2000
and can be viewed in the April 2000 archives at:
http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index/HUGUENOTS-WALLOONS-EUROPE/2000-04.

2) TESTARD, TESTAS, TESTU, TESTA and TETAR were
listed in the post: SURNAMES (TA-TO) > Threadneedle St.
Church tesmoignages, dated 12 Nov 2001. That post can be
viewed in the archives for Nov 2001 at:
http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index/HUGUENOTS-WALLOONS-EUROPE/2001-11.

These sources don't prove any connection to your family
but they may provide you with some useful clues for linking
your TESTARDs with earlier time periods
I would also suggest looking for TESTARD in the IGI if you
have not already done so because persons who were baptised
or married in one of the French Protestant churches in England
whose records have been published by the Huguenot Society
of London should be listed there.
You can search these churches by batch number. See these
posts in the archives, for example --
10 May 2002 Finding Huguenots via batch numbers (IGI)
10 May 2002 Batch Numbers: French Churches, London, ENG
28 Jun 2002 Batch Numbers: Churches in Canterbury, Kent, ENG

As for the connection between TESTARD and DEMONTIGNY
that you mentioned, it would be interesting to know some details
of what you've found. I did a web search myself for this combination
of names but could find none that were an obvious reference to
French Protestants. You also referred to FONTAINE -- a fairly
common French name which has come up before on the list --
you may find something of interest in the archives.

Hope the above comments are helpful to you, Natasha.
Good luck and please let us know if you learn new details.
Andrea
