Hello everyone, I'm a new member working with my mother to find our
ancestors - especially our Huguenot ones! My grandmother was born in
London's East End and always said our ancestors were Huguenots. She was a
fantastic tailor and made a living making copies of top designer clothes for
the gentry. Sadly for us she wouldn't tell us any details about her history
other than that ('that's all gone and finished with' she'd say). Anyway
we're only back as far as about 1800-1840, the start of formal registration
plus what we've gleaned from the IGI. I'm told I need to get further back
to confirm Huguenot ancestry is that right? My gggggrandfather Charles
Heidon ran a school in Walthamstow Essex & in 1851 he had a French teacher
there called Emile Duffour from Paris and a servant called Kelly Duery from
Margate. Would they be lingering Huguenot links? My great grandmother
married a chap called Rance, as this is a big French river would this be
Huguenot name? He wasn't French, he was a gentleman's gentleman but the couple retired to an antiques
shop in Brighton's Lanes.
It's difficult to get to London to do further research (we live in Devon)
but would love to go further back. Is a personal visit or researcher the
only way?
Many thanks for your time and help,
Lynne.
