Hi List,
I'm not sure I'm on the appropriate list but my surname is Jaquiss
pronounced Quiss with a J on the front. I have talked to people in Florida
who have the same spelling but pronounce it Jack- wiss. Our family has
spelled it Jaquiss and pronounced it Ja with a long "A" Quiss since at least
the late 1700s.
I have always understood that my family's surname was Norman English
probably derived from Jacques or Jacques' son.
My family came to Iowa in the mid 1800s and can be traced back to the 1660s
in England. They came to the states from Liverpool from 1840s on. We have
traced them back through the counties of Leicester, Warwick, Derby,
Stafford, and Lancashire with the spellings in various documents as appear
above.
My direct line was in Appanoose Co, Iowa, USA since 1852 until the 1930s.
They had sibling lines in many other counties in Iowa and Kansas and other
states.
Can anyone tell me how I go about finding out how I determine whether or not
Jaquiss is an Huguenot family?
If anyone has any information on the Jaquiss family or would like to compare
data, please contact me.
Thanks. Deborah
