Subject: [HWE] Huguenot occupation?
| Dear List,
| I'm still trying to find out if my ancestors were Huguenots -
| there is strong oral tradition but no evidence. Just obtained a will and
| inventory of a possible ancestor dated 1680. snip
Other than an emphasis on weaving they took up the same occupations as
everybody else.
What I did find, and its a little odd is a Naturalization Bill that did not
become Acts and dated, I think, early 1673. In it it states
"George HENSHAW, a boy of 14, who had not been sworn or received the
sacrament."
This was a Naturalisation Bill whereas at that time most, if not all,
Huguenots applied for a Denization. By taking the later they did not loose
their nationality as they were convinced their stay out of France would not
be a long one.
There is a mention of a Charles HENSHOW, spelling/transcription error? in
the register of the French Church of Threadneedle Street in 1699. He was a
godfather at a christening.
Bear in mind that to prove one or more of your ancestors were Huguenots you
will have to find that they attended a Protestant Temple whether this be by
way of the temple records or a tesmoignage.
Roy.
