This 'fable' of the origins of the name Kercheval needs to be stamped on
before it gets out of hand. anyone with any education will know that Ker or
the english Caer means a fortified village. The suffix -eval/aval means a
valley, so the name implies a village in or by a valley.
There is no record in Marshall's guide- the genealogists guide to the
genealogies of the families of the Gentry and nobility of England - of the
name Kercheval. the story about early mentions of the name in the 12-13th
Century must be regarded with a pinch of salt, as it cannot be verified
through any of my sources which happen to be the usual ones held by a
genealogist + a few others. the name is undoubtedly breton and one would
need to join the French List to find more!
