Hugh - Hugonis
William - Guillelmus or Willielmus
James - Jacobus
John - Johannes
Matthew - Matteus
Edward - Edwardus
Robert - Robertus

Elizabeth - Elizabetha
Anne - Anna
Mary - Maria

As you can see most are straightforward variations of the English form
The word endings may vary because Latin uses that to indicate the `case' of
the word.

If I remember correctly Latin ceased to be the official language of legal
business in England around 1730 (ish) but there is a lot of overlap with
English starting to be used in late 1400's and Latin lingering on into the
19th century

Hoping this may be of some general use.

Please give us some examples of common first names that have been Latinized.

Likely explanation of the unusual Christian names is that the clerk / vicar
fancied himself a Latin scholar. They all translate into common English
names. Hugh, William, James, Elizabeth. This is quite common in 16 and 17th
C registers.

Dear Diana

There was nothing on the 1881 census of Great Britain but these below came
from the LDS Vital Records Index of the British Isles. Nott is
Nottinghamshire by the way. The christian names are interesting! Hugonis is
definitely different and they seem either Latin or Roman to me.

Perhaps they changed the name by the 1800's or possibly the name just died
out.

Hope this helps,

Pat
