Dear Listers --

This is regarding the virus warning sent to the list earlier today (16
Apr).

While I understand that the possibility of computer viruses is a worry,
posting such warnings on the list is not appropriate. If you feel you must
warn others, please do so by sending them a private message off-list. May I
also remind you that Rootsweb has filters to catch viruses and prevent them
from being transmitted through the lists.
The topic of virus warnings last appeared on this list during the first
week of March when I gave the same advice. For further details, please refer
to that post in the list archives dated 6 March with subject line: No Virus
Warnings Please. As I said at that time, there is also a lot of information
about computer viruses (as well as virus hoaxes) which is accessible on our
website at http://www.island.net/~andreav/index.html (in the Beyond the
Basics section).

The website info also includes some sites where you can go to clean your
computer of viruses if you think your PC might be infected. Just as a
precaution, I had one of these sites check my computer just now and no
viruses were found. The site I chose to use was
http://housecall.antivirus.com/housecall/start_corp.asp but there are
several similar ones listed on the website.
