Hullo Fellow Huguenot Seekers,

I have been galvanized into action by Andrea's story of the two little lurkers. I don't like to think of myself as a lurker (just slow to make up my mind). This then is my effort.

The subject line tells it all really. I'm looking for those CUPPLES' who sprang from Northern Ireland 1500's -1600's onwards. Actually I'm working in both directions, from the present and from the past and have decided that the next place to look is the Muster Rolls. But how do I find the number that I believe I shall need to search at the LDS? I need someone to please put me straight here?

The Cupples', my lot that is, have been researched and documented, if that's the right term, from the present back to about the early 1800's and they are:

my 4 bros.and I: Ken, David, Coral, Malcolm and Lyndsay all NZ born
my dad Archibald born Banbridge 1902, only child
my granddad Archibald born Banbridge 1880 m. Sarah BELL (also of Ireland) Three brothers, seven sisters.
my g.granddad David born Ireland (probably B'bridge) 1859 m. Margaret LEDLIE ( also of Ireland) One bro. two sisters. We think.
my g.g.granddad Jos. George born Ireland (date unknown) m.Jane
POLLOCK (also of Ireland) At least one bro.(Alex.) We think.

The first CUPPLES we know of is Thomas born 1650 in SCARVA. They all seem to have been centered for two or three hundred years around the area of SCARVA, BANBRIDGE, LOUGHBRICKLAND, all places within an area of about five miles of each other and linked with the linen trade since at least
the time of the Industrial Revolution. I think they could quite possibly have been in Ireland long before the influx of Huguenots who arrived in the middle to late 1600's and therefore could be harder to track.

There were various efforts by various rulers(sic) of Ireland to encourage, for example, the linen trade and all its aspects and this included importing talent and skills from other countries. This was happening in the 1500's when Elizabeth was on the throne. It's quite possible my folk were some of those imported folk. I know that family lore tells us that the CUPPLES' were persecuted out of France and came to Ireland via Wales. Rather an unusual route to take and I've often wondered why. Again, has anybody any ideas? Perhaps they were subsequently named in the Muster Rolls of Ireland to help quell various shenanigans that went on there periodically. Hopefully, in something like the Muster Rolls, we will find a name that could have been ours. I'd love it if someone had any other suggestions as to where else we could expect to find useful info on earlier Huguenots.

However, the other problem is that we don't think that the original name was CUPPLES. We suspect the name has been Anglicized. So we're casting around, looking at anything vaguely resembling it and hoping like mad our number comes up, so to speak. As you see, it's not at all clear what we should be looking for. But as Andrea's story illustrated, no communication - no results! So I'm hoping that lots of lurkers and browsers for that matter, will recognize something vaguely familiar or even if they don't, feel moved to leap to the keyboard and COMMUNICATE!!

Regards,

CORAL CUPPLES WOON IN NZ.
