On 3 February Diane Buddenbohn <> had asked about Dr. John
DURAND, possibly from La Rochelle, FRA, and had wondered if he was a
Huguenot. I don't recall that a time period was mentioned.
I have no information specifically about this person but I thought it
might be of interest to say that there were DURAND/DURRANTs in Kent, ENG in
the 1700's who definitely were Huguenot or Walloon. One family in particular
played a prominent role, as noted by the following two burial records from
the BT's of the parish of Canterbury Holy Cross.
1789 Sep 20 Burial of Revd. Francis William DURAND, aged 74 years, forty
years Minister of the French Church within the Precincts of the Cathedral
Church of Christ Church Canterbury. Buried in the Church.
(The Walloon Church at Canterbury did not have its own building. Instead, it
was given space in the crypt of the Cathedral where services were held.)
1797 Oct 4 Martha Mary DURAND, widow of the Revd. Francis William DURAND,
Late Minister of the French Congregation in this Place, aged 73 years, was
buried in the Church.
Note that both Revd. and Mrs. DURAND were honoured by being buried
within the church itself.
So, this proves that at least some of the DURANDs in Kent, ENG during
that time period were Huguenot. Does it prove anything about Diane's Dr.
John DURAND? Unfortunately, no. There may be a connection but there may not.
In any case, hope this has been of interest. Andrea
