Subject: [H-W-E] Huguenot info: LDS web site (Place Search)
Date: Wed, 2 Feb 2000 11:50:37 -0800

Greetings to all -- I thought I would post the following which (hopefully!)
explains how to find Huguenot/Walloon information on the LDS web site at
www.familysearch.org. By this, I do not mean the IGI. I mean the holdings
which the Mormon church has on the subject of Huguenots/Walloons -- what it
has in the way of films, books, fiche, etc. The contents of any of these
*cannot* be examined online but films/fiche can be ordered/examined at a
Mormon FHC in your local area.
The search for information would be easy to do if the site had a Subject
Search but it doesn't (although I have been told they are thinking of it).
So the search must be done in a round-about way, using the particular
geographical area which you are interested in. I haven't found it easy. Hope
you have better luck <g>.
Here is how to proceed --
1) Once on the website (www.familysearch.org), click on Custom Search (blue
tab near top right corner)
2) Click on Family History Library Catalog
3) Click on Place Search
4) Type in the geographical area of your choice
5) Once in the listings for that area, look under any or all of the
following sub-headings: -- Church Records
-- Minorities
-- Immigration and Emigration
If at first you don't succeed, keep trying <g>. The info is there
(somewhere!) but it's not always easy to find. If you end up totally
frustrated, please contact me (off list) and I'll try to help. And if anyone
has figured out an easier way, let me know that too (also off-list please).
I'll post a summary of any new info I learn.
More on searches through LDS web site in later posts. Stay tuned. Hope
this has been informative. Regards and best wishes to all, Andrea (list
janitor)
