Hello List,
There's a couple of mysteries in my ancestry that may be cleared up in this
list, with the help of LDS members or others reseaching the surnames
indicated.
Part One: Great-grandfather Hamilton Jonas Keen m.
MARTHA ANN WARE c. 1850-1858 in Oroville, Butte, CA.; son Walter
Hamilton Keen, b. April 20, 1859 m. Mary Anna Bellows in Acampo, CA
Our family notes say that Martha Ann Ware was the sole survivor in her
immediate family of a Pioneer Trail trek, and that her family originated in
the US in Virginia. Her sister, who did not survive the trail, was (Unnamed)
WARE m. STEPHEN SMITH. No mention of children from this marriage, only the
phrase "and family." Brother PETER GALLETIN WARE also did not survive.
Part Two: Grandaunt Rebecca Moore Bellows, b. Jan. 14, 1878 m. JOHN BUDD
WARE. Son: JOHN BENTON WARE
I quote family notes: "It is thought that Martha Ann Ware and John Budd
Ware were related, since there was a PETER G. [(Galletin)] WARE in both
families, in which case Benton and Ramona Ware and Ila and Lester Keen
would be cousins on both their Father's and their Mother's sides."
In recent examinations of my Ware lines, I found WFT, VOL l., files 2225,6.
In it there is JOHN BUDD WARE(no descendants shown), father ELIAS BENTON
WARE, all shown to be in California from Missouri. Too big a similarity,
especially when I saw that JOHN BUDD'S mother was MARY ANN SMITH, b. Oct.
22, 1846, and that her parents were foster, being ROBERT WILD m. FRANCES
FUGETT. I am entertaining a notion that JOHN BUDD WARE's wife was the
(unknown to us) surviving daughter, or her contemporary immediate other
relative of my STEPHEN SMITH & (Unnamed) WARE. Niece?
The names WILD(S) and Fugett (Fugitt) come up in two more places. JOHN BUDD
WARE's grandfather, ELIAS NEWMAN WARE m. MARY CAMPBELL WILD. What
relationship was foster parent (of Mary Ann Smith) ROBERT WILD to her?
My queries in Virginia, Missouri and California records for Marth Ann Ware
yielded nothing. Neither did examinations of other pioneer trail lists.
However, in my travels through marriage records in Missouri, I noted a
Martha W. Fugitt m. J. M. Wilds on February Feb. 21, 1849.
Could she be Martha Ann Ware who lost both husband Wild(s) and father
Fugitt on the trail? - assuming her ancestral name WARE in California? I
think this a stretch, but maybe not considering the times and the
persecution suffered by LDS families.
In addition to everything else, census records show a Fugitt family in
Acampo, California. My mother remembers the family being there, although no
overt relationship was shown to the Keen family by them or MARTHA ANN WARE
KEEN to them as far as my Mother remembers, and it should be noted that no
known LDS connections were known to be in this family. It's just that the
timing and the names and locations are right in line with my limited
knowledge of the ill treatment of the LDS in Missouri, and the subsequent
Mormon Trail tragedies.
I would appreciate any help I can get on this. As yet I have not had
contact with the author of the WFT file mentioned, which is planned. That
contact along with other leads, and responses from this site, and my
mysteries may be solved.
Hoping, on this day of the beginning of Eternal Hope, Easter.
Regards, -Lowry Day
