To all:

Just a guess, but I know that certain large FHCs get a "beta" version before new
CDs are released (this applies to the IGI, too). I live near the Annandale FHC
in northern VA, and they get updates before any of the others in the area. In
the past, they got betas about three months ahead of everyone else. I'll try to
call, but they may be closed this week. Of course, the person that answers the
phone may not have the information anyway.

By the way, our stake FHC has the British vital records CD. I was somewhat
disappointed in that it didn't have any more information that the IGI on the
family surname I was looking for in a particular county in England (Illingworths
in Lancashire). There are about a dozen microfilms for various parishes in the
town of Blackburn, but only one has been extracted.

One thing to note in researching English and Scottish families in the mid-1800s:
a LOT of the families moved from small villages to cities to work in factories
before they emigrated to the US. I know my Illingworths came to New England in
1845, but I didn't find them in the 1841 census in Blackburn, England, although
I know at least one son was born there in 1827. As the men of the family were
"moulders" (i.e., foundry workers) in the US, I think they may have migrated to
Manchester and worked in foundries there before coming to the U.S. Similar
migration patterns occurred among families I researched who emigrated to Utah
with the 9th Handcart Co.

The last I heard, the FHD didn't want to commit to any ship dates,
and so I don't expect that anyone will have an answer to this
question. We'll all get them when we get them, and when that
happens, we'll all be pleasantly surprised.

About a month ago, rumors began surfacing that the main FHL in
SLC is trying out a new edition of the AF, with a data submission
cutoff date of about January 1998 (as usual, the submission cutoff
is about a year behind the CD-ROM release date). Rumors are also
that the local FHC's will begin to receive them "soon", but there's
no definition of when "soon" is. My center director told us "the end
of 1998", but (as I predicted) that never happened. Other rumors
include first quarter of 1999 and second quarter of 1999. MHO: I've
been watching the pattern of AF releases for almost ten years, and
I've learned to remain skeptical, and so I'll believe it when I see it.
