Surprise..everyone has Indian ancestry and it's usually identified as
Cherokee. My pioneers said the same thing.

First of all Cherokees were in the South.....they were in TN, AL, SC, NC not
New England. They moved with the Trail of Tears to Arkansas in 1829. A few to
Missouri for a brief period, but generally the very southern part near
Arkansas, not where the Mormons were. Many Cherokee descendants later moved to
Oklahoma.

If you have Indian blood, it's most likely not Cherokee, but one of the
Northern tribes.
There are a bunch of great websites including "Cherokee by Blood" that will
give you all the pertinent info on how to search the extant records to
determine if you indeed do have Indian blood (Cherokee or otherwise).
