In addition to checking the "Crossing the Plains/Ocean" indexes mentioned by
Anne, you might also want to check the Journal History of the Church for the
date of arrival (or shortly after). 1849 is too early for announcements in
the Deseret News, but for later companies, the News usually printed lists of
those arriving in various companies, sometimes with notes about the
origination of the company (only in general terms), when they left the
jumping off points, and descriptions of deaths or other difficulties faced by
that company. In many cases, relief parties from Salt Lake went out to meet
them, and there will be several anticipatory stories for the weeks before
their arrival.
If anybody already has an EXACT date for arrival in Utah for the 1850s or
1860s, I would be happy to look for stories in the Deseret News and Journal
History of the Church. (If I get overwhelmed by requests, this will have to
be limited to helping people outside the Wasatch Front who should already
have easy access to search these materials themselves.)
