Margaret:

I have a tremendous amount of information regarding the early pioneers to
Utah. I haven't read all of the histories (of course) but I didn't know
that a handcart company continued on to California from Utah. My 'one'
group of Pioneers spent time in San Bernadino.

When the Saints encouraged the settling of California that section of
Carlifornia (San Bernadino) was part of the original Utah Territory. I
have a map I could scan in and let everyone have individually so that you
could see just where this original territory covered.

San Bernadino was a Mormon town until about 1858-60 time period when the
territory started being slashed and Brigham Young called the Saints to
'come back towards Salt Lake City.' My good neighbor has lent me his Utah
History Book (he was a teacher a 'long' time ago) and I have been reading
on this early settlement.

My gggrandmother went to San Bernadino about 1856 when Johnston's Army was
sent to Utah to 'quell' the Mormon problem. This family was my Booth
family and they had been part of the 'original' group to settle Brigham
City, Utah, 1853, right next to where I now live. Brigham Young warned all
the Saints about the army's coming and requested everyone to come to and
around Salt Lake City. My Booths didn't stop at Salt Lake City :) but kept
going further west and landed at San Bernadino. My gggranmother married
her husband there, 1858, and then the whole group came back to 'Utah' about
1860 or so.

Let me know that time period you are searching and some names and birth
dates and I will see what I can find out for you.

If anyone wants a copy of the map I will send it out individually to you.
No problem, but you must have a good graphics viewer (Internet Explorer
does great) like NeoPaint or Microsoft Paint to look at it and print it up.
I will save it in jpeg format which is easiest to send and most compatible
with graphics programs.

Let me know.

I am proud of my heritage and descendancy. My other gggrandmother pulled a
handcart with a young singles group on the ill-fated Willie Handcart
Company. Her name was Emma Bravandt and she was with my husband's ancestor
James Laird who with his wife and young child and little baby all survived
this horrible trek over the barren trails and snow covered mountains. Can
you imagine being able to keep only 17 pounds of 'personal' items? This
wouldn't have included clothes or other 'necessities' but just things like
dishes, lamps, and other 'items' that were deemed extras for the trek. Not
grandmother's rocking chair, for sure!

Please keep in mind that once you have proof of your pioneer ancestor's
travels with any group to Utah you can order a plaque for their headstones
that states "PIONEERS OF 1851" or whatever year they came to Utah. These
plaques can be ordered from the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers. I don't
have the cost, but I am going to order several and can let everyone know
the cost.
