My ancestors, Thomas Dodd his wife Elizabeth ( Piercy ) Dodd and their
children 4 sons and a daughter, Elizabeth b. July 15, 1853, Alma b. Mar. 13,
1846, Thomas
b. Jan.21, 1828, Joseph Smith b. Oct. 10, 1850 and Brigham Young b.Dec.
27,1855
left Liverpool England in May of 1856 and arrived at Iowa City, Iowa in July
where they had to make their own handcarts from green wood. There were 576
people in this troop under the direction of Captain Martin, they reached
Florence on Aug. 22 1856 and rested a few days then started of to Utah.
Amoung many mishaps on this trek at Red Buttes the last crossing of the
Platte River they were caught in a snow storm and before they were rescued
many people died , one of then, my ancestor Thomas Dodd, died some where in
this area and was buried in a common grave with 30 others. Elizabeth and the
children went on to Utah and she married George Chick. They left the Mormon
community and came to kansas in 1858.
Brighan Young Dodd, my great uncle, died in 1948 he was the last living
person to make the handcart trek. He was not quite 1 year old when he got to
Utah.
