Hello Nancy

The term "Sr" versus "Jr" was often used to distinguish men
of the same name (but different generations) living at the
same time. These men would usually be related - perhaps
uncle and nephew (but not necessarily)

So if there were two men named John Groves (related in some
way) living in the same area, one could be called John Sr
the other John Jr, and they would not have to be father and
son.
