I have a Confederate Civil War ancestor for which I have not been able to
obtain medical, or pension records. I have a short paragraph I was able to
copy from a book that lists Civil War regiments--I think it was called The
Roster. We were told that he lost a leg at Gettysburg and this was confirmed
in this book. This ancestor's obituary stated that he received a pension for
a number of years and it just suddenly stopped without notice. He served from
Forsyth County, NC and moved to MO shortly after the war (1868). I have
checked with the state Archives in NC and they said they had no record. (Just
that...I don't know if that meant they don't have the records or if they just
didn't have a record of him.)
Does anyone have any suggestions of where else I could try to obtain pension
records? Would these pension records also contain the medical information on
his injuries at Gettysburg? I understand that over the course of a few weeks,
he had 3 separate amputations of the same leg because of gangrene. He was a
prisoner of war and the mentioned book does list where and what dates. If the
medical records are something separate, does anyone have suggestions of where
I could try to obtain these records?
Thank you for any help.
Cathy
