This happened, leaving the letter off, to my paternal uncle. He was found
dead in the LA area, and the ONLY ways they could trace him were a
fingerprint and a ssn which gave my gm as the next of kin. This was in
1963. He isn't listed on SSDI. I am sure that the the funeral director
saw to it, they got paid something. Was cremated.

|Pam and all:
|
|Quite often the SS# that is furnished to the funeral director for
inclusion
|in the Death Certificate, is that of the spouse, not the deceased. It is
|quite often the same with the exception of a letter, usually D or B at the
|end. Some funeral directors inadvertently leave this letter off. All this
|means is that the deceased did not have a social security account of her
|own and was drawing her benefits on her spouse's account. This is quite
|frequently the case when we are dealing with a deceased person who's
spouse
|preceded her in death.
|
|Sometimes the person suppling the information on the deceased is not aware
|of what the letter indicates and drops it when giving it to the funeral
|director. Then we may or may not find out if the SS Administration or
|Dept. of Vital Statistics calls us to inform us of the mistake.
|
|Just for your edification as an alternative reason for a wrong SS# on a
|death certificate.
