I too, would like to submit my experience.

About a year ago I sent to the IL archives for my grandmother's birth record
(1894) and was informed by them that I must apply to the County Clerk which I
then did.  I sent the required $10.00 and received a transcribed certified
birth certificate.  I did not need it to be certified, I just wanted
information (as most of us do) regarding parents' birthplaces, occupation,
siblings, etc.

What I received was a certificate only with her date of birth and parents
names, which I already knew.  Now get this !!  The person doing the
transcribing, typed in my ggmother's surname as Amman, when actually it was
Norman.  Luckily, I knew her name or I would have gone on a wild goose chase
to the mideast somewhere., so please beware of transcribed records because the
person doing it may be dealing with a poor handwriting.

I have learned since then, to ask for a copy of the ORIGINAL record which I am
about to do.  I hope it works.

Eileen
