My suggestion is that you should use archivally safe cards to record the
information.  Use a hole punch to perferate the card.  I wouls not use
steel safety pins as they'll rust.  But how about the type of safety pin
that I see used with babies -- the onew that are vinyl or plastic clad?
Otherwise, why not use a piece of heavy thread and simply put one stitch
through the quilt and loop through the tag.
