Re: SS burial benefits:
The social security funeral and burial benefit used to be paid to anyone
who paid for the burial expenses of a person who had paid into social
security during his lifetime. About the time that Jimmy Carter was
president, the rules were changed. Only the surviving spouse (or, I think,
a surviving child under 18) could apply and receive the burial benefit.
Hardly seems fair. A person pays into SS and yet his family gets help for
the burial only if he has a surviving spouse? The surviving spouse paid
into SS also, yet no help is forthcoming for his\her funeral. It is
discrimination as far as I can see. Either all are eligible or none. The
Calif. legislature complained about this but got nowhere.
