Speaking of The Watkins Man, there was also The Raleighs Man and for awhile
in the Twenties I remember a McConnells Man. People used to argue about the
respective merits of their vanilla extract. Today I guess the Amway Man has
taken their place. Amway salesmen seem to do well in rural areas where there
is less competition for disposable income or perhaps they fill a shopping
void in the rural areas. It may come as a surprise but there are many Amway
millionaires. The founders of the company are billionaires. Most of these
people who have gone "Direct" would not deign to sell in the manner of the
Watkin's Man, being taught to constantly pursue new salesman to do the
selling and from whose sales they will get a percentage. I must say though
that they have good products which I obtain from a relative. Relatives sell
to relatives. Many Amway salesmen are too shy to sell to anyone else. That is
not really true but there is a kernel of truth there. After they have sold
the obligatory amount they are encouraged to recruit for it is in the
recruiting of their own group that success lies. Does it beat being a
Watkins' man? Probably if you are good recruiter and build your group into a
critical mass that will allow you to be "made Direct". How do I know this ?
Because I used to get hit on.
