Hi--
Am really enjoying all the chatting (especially from Chas.)
About the RH factor--may I add my two-cents??
Gender DOES matter, for it is when the "Mother" is Negative and the father
is Positive that raises concern.
I am RH Negative and my husband was Positive. We had three children (1958;
1961; 1962) BEFORE the shots.
The first was a girl and she, too, was RH Negative.
Let me tell you a little story about the first time I walked down to the
nursery to view my first-born.
I spotted a "red ribbon" on her bassinet. I was totally insulted...she was
my first and to me (of course!!) she was absolutely beautiful and perfect,
how dare that hospital give her the second place "red ribbon" when this
baby was definitely "FIRST" Prize and deserved a "BLUE" ribbon????
Naturally, I complained, only to discover the red ribbon indicated she was
"RH Negative" in her blood type. We did not have any problems with her.
She was a healthy baby and weighed 8 lb. 5 oz. (and did I already say how
beautiful she was?)!!!
My second was a boy who weighed in at 9-1/2 lbs. He is RH Positive. Born
very healthy!
My third was a boy who is RH Negative. He was premature (7 month baby) and
still weighed 5 lb. 12-1/2 oz. (The doctor said he would have been about
11-13 lbs. if he were a full-term baby!) He, too, was a healthy baby, even
though he was premature. He did not have anything wrong with his blood.
To explain what two different doctors told me:
If a man is negative and marries a positive woman, there will not be any
problems with the RH factor. The concerns are when the MOTHER is negative
and marries a positive man.
Also, another thing they said I was very lucky with: each one of my
children alternated the RH factor--doctors are concerned when a negative
Mother/positive Father have two babies in a row with the same RH factor.
Usually, the 3rd child (used to -- in the olden days) have to have a blood
transfusion/exchange.
When my third son (negative factor) married a woman (positive factor) there
was no concern.
My daughter also married a positive factor man. Her first-born, a girl,
also was born RH Negative. My daughter's pregnancy also came BEFORE the
'shot' (or at least she was NOT given one!). My granddaughter just had a
baby on June 15, 1997. She was given the shot and was told the shot was
not for this pregnancy, but for her "next" pregnancy. (Oh yes, the new
'girl' baby is also RH negative!) My granddaughter didn't have any
problems with the RH factor, but she became sick with toxemia and the baby
was an emergency C-section about five weeks early.
Also, my sister, (second in birth) was also RH negative and HER first-born,
a daughter, is RH negative. I'm beginning to think it is definitely passed
down by the mothers.
To finish up and go back to a "genealogy" story about me...which has really
made me feel ancient myself...whenever I discover something about my
great-grandparents (who all died before I was born), naturally, I get all
excited! The other day when I was 'showing off' MY new GREAT
granddaughter, the realization suddenly hit me--I'm thinking how old and
long ago my great grandparents lived and I never knew them--here I am a
GREAT grandparent myself and I don't think I'm "OLD" -- tell me how to
figure that one??? I'm just glad that I'm able to hold her and give her
all the love I missed from my ancestors!!!
