You can generally pretty well guess about the time a photo was taken by
the clothes the people were wearing.

In general, you can use this as a way to determine the time period, as
even most archivist do, I suppose. But there are also so drawbacks, as
I experienced. I had a photograph of a great-aunt of my husband's, and
judging from the clothing, I guessed it was the mid-1860s, around the
Civil War era. Boy, was I wrong! I hadn't taken into account that
these people were poor dirt farmers and were about 20-30 years behind in
their styles!
