Sorry about the subject, list members, but that is what it sounds like.
My aunt married a man about whom nobody has any knowledge.
There are no records (Birth etc) for him.
My aunt was previously engaged to another man. She broke it off and married
this one, much to the chagrin of my grandparents. They never communicated
with her until, in his 81st yr, and just after the death of my grandmother,
my grandfather made his way out to the family of her daughter, and 'made his
peace' with them.
My aunt became quite ill with what was diagnosed as Parkinson's at the
time - I think around 1924, and died fairly soon after.
Her husband remarried, and confided his 'secret' to his new wife, adding
'the girls must never know.' The girls were 2 little daughters, my cousins,
one of whom told me this story.
When she started working on the Family History, some 20 years ago, she
approached the war office in search of her father's war service papers, and
medals etc. She was told they went to a lady in Frankston, the surname quite
unfamiliar to her. Knowing that information and especially, medals, went
only to direct kin, she came to the belief that this person must have been
her paternal grandmother, however when she tried to locate her, neither the
name nor the address produced any clues.
Meanwhile, the second wife of this man has gone to her grave, dutifully
never letting 'the girls' know anything of the background of their father -
whoever he was.
It smells like change of name, but what would make the reason for this so
dastardly that the girls must not know?
As far as I can make out, he was a carpenter/furniture maker, sober and a
churchgoer - in fact he arranged for foster families for his 2 girls after
their mother died, from the members of the church.
Does anyone know about accessing name change information, and how to access
this?
I am not happy about disclosing names etc yet, but if anyone genuinely
wishes to help solve this mystery, please contact me off list.

cheers,

Nandina
