PRESS RELEASE - 13 May 2001
Transcriptions and index of names of the monumental inscriptions at the
Melbourne General Cemetery.
You will probably know that the Society had hoped to have already published
a searchable CD-ROM and an index to the names in the transcriptions of MGC.
An audit of the transcriptions has, sadly, shown several hundred
transcriptions and several thousand names are missing for reasons unknown.
It will obviously take more time to remedy this which would therefore delay
the production of the CD-ROM by many months.
Council has discussed this and, in view of the strong interest in this
CD-ROM together with the number of orders already received, has decided
that we will produce two versions: the first to be produced as soon as
possible using the files we now have, and the second to be produced when we
are satisfied that all the missing transcriptions have been restored and
indexed. Council also decided that purchasers of the first version may have
their CD-ROM replaced by the second version AT NO EXTRA COST.
There are more than 100,000 names in the index of the first edition and you
can place your order now.
We will press a limited number of the first edition which will be available
on a first come first served basis after the backorders have been
processed. Credit cards and cheques from those who have already ordered the
CD-ROM will only be processed when the CD is ready to mail.
We will not be re-pressing the first edition once it is sold out.
We will post a follow up to this notice as soon as the first edition CD-ROM
is ready to roll.
