Subject: Re New Mail List for GSV Member Societies, GSGs & DCs
Date: Thu, 20 Jul 2000 10:42:22 +1000
To Secretaries of
Genealogical and Family History Societies who are
member Societies of the GSV, and
Genealogical Service Groups, and
Discussion Circles.
You will be pleased to know that following our Annual Meeting for GSV
Groups on 8th July 2000, our President, David Weatherill immediately
set up a special rootsweb Mailing List for GSV Groups to use for easy
communication between each another and with GSV Liaison.
The name of this new List is AUS-VIC-GEN-GROUPS-L
1. How to subscribe. Send a message to
that contains (in the body of the message) the command
subscribe
and no additional text.
(Use "D" for digest mode).
2. How to unsubscribe. just send the command "unsubscribe" to
.
3. How to change to mail mode (each posting is sent to you as a
separate e-mail). There are two steps. First, send the command
"unsubscribe" to to
discontinue individual messages mode. Second, send the command
"subscribe" to
to start receiving
messages in digest mode.
4. How to change to NOMAIL mode. There is no formal NOMAIL mode.
All you have to do is follow the directions above and unsubscribe
when you want the messages to stop, and then when you want them
to start again, simply subscribe again.
5. If you'd like to post a message so everyone on the mailing
list receives it, just send it to .
It will then be sent on to everyone in both mail and digest mode.
You don't need to send it explicitly to both.
6. To contact the administrator of this mailing list, send mail to
.
May I encourage all GSV Groups with email facility to join this new
List and use it as discussed by delegates to the GSV Groups Annual
Meeting on 8th July.
Whether your Group does or does not have the computer facility to join
this list, it would be useful if those "email connected" Committee
members of the various Groups joined this new List, and participated
in a wider community of communicators for their own and their Group's
benefit.
In the first posting on AUS-VIC-GEN-GROUPS-L, President David
Weatherill made stated the following:
"Welcome to the Mailing List.
At the Annual Meeting of the various groups that are associated with
the Genealogical Society of Victoria [GSV] ie:
* Service Groups,
* Discussion Circles,
* Member Societies,
held on Saturday 8th July, 2000 at the GSV, a recommendation was
accepted that a Mailing List be set up to assist with communication
among all
the groups.
An initial start to this communication was made via the reports
provided by many of the groups and published in a booklet form and
given to each
of the groups that attended this annual meeting.
The reports provided an excellent indication of:
* the group itself,
* projects that the group had and is undertaking,
* publications produced or in progress, and
* office bearers of the group; just to name a few.
Brian Gleeson, the Council Member responsible for liaising with all
groups, did an outstanding job in both organising and running the
meeting.
In the final session of the program, the idea of having a mailing list
for communication between the many groups was proposed by Suzi Zada
from
the Bellarine Historical Society and Ken McInnes of the VicGUM
[Genealogists Using Microcomputers] Group and keenly supported by most
in
attendance. It was felt that the Mailing List would:
* have copies of WHAT'S GOING ON, and
GROUPS' UPDATE, on it.- GSV information.
* Groups could assist one another with useful information about:
- their holdings,
- publications available,
- projects,
- services,
- sharing of resources,
- requests for assistance and support,
- perhaps share newsletters.
* Sharing with each other information on projects that are being
planned or in progress.
* Information on forthcoming seminars, conferences, etc.
So, this Mailing List - AUS-VIC-GEN-GROUPS-L, has been set up. The GSV
will provide information on it, but it is hoped that most other groups
will
also use it.
The Mailing List is open to all groups and any members of the groups
that wish to join. It is an open list and currently moderated by David
Weatherill, President of the GSV. It was requested by the members at
the meeting that the GSV set up the Mailing List. It is not the
intention
of the GSV to run the groups.
Remember that there is also the mailing list - GSV-L, for support by
the GSV and to deal with specific requests by individual members.
Please use the List to help each other, to communicate and share with
each other and in furthering research into family history/genealogy.
Good Luck and I hope that this Mailing List will be of value to you
all.
Kindest regards,
David
