Subject: WHO WAS CLASSIFIED AS FOREIGN?
Date: Fri, 19 May 2000 15:41:58 +1000

My gg grandfather John Williams born Cape of Good Hope c.1840 emmigrated to
Victoria at some time before his first marriage in 1873 in Eaglehawk Vic.,
for which I have the certificate. Would there be naturalisation records?
We think the family were boers. His father was also John Williams,
farmer, and his mother was Adriana Phinolophin [sic], possibly Van Ollefan
or similar. [He was illiterate so phonetics prevail over spelling!] Did
non-British migrants have to have a special immigration permit? Did they
have to become naturalised?

I have tried the new shipping indexes to track his arrival and previous
history but can find no immigrants from Foreign ports listed after 1859.
Can anyone explain that? Surely people came from Forign ports after that
date!

There is also a rumour that he was a seaman, so could have come as crew,
and could even have come after years of service on a British ship. Would
he then be listed as migrating from a British Port? Would he then also
have a British nationality for immigration purposes?

Hoping someone can help,
Patricia Rodriquez
