Subject: Married Spinster?
Date: Thu, 04 May 2000 20:02:44 PDT

Hi Folks,

Would anyone like to comment on the following points/remarks about my
Great-great grandmother? (No she didn't wear Army boots!)

(I have the 1855 marriage certificate (Collingwood) for her, Mary NANCE, and
my Great-great grandfather John ROBINSON.)

In her husbands Will he refers to her as ...Mary NANCE, who is and has for
some time, been living with me...

and the solicitor's notice in the paper refers to her as ...Mary NANCE,
spinster, sole excutrix of the estate of John ROBINSON.

Was this typical? Has the meaning of spinster changed since 1882?

Comments appreciated.
